reviews

a little software review of some (2) programs i’ve tried recently or not so recently.

i downloaded the newest version of AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). the review? it’s horrid. it still looks like it was put together in a dungeon in the 1500’s. that’s all i needed to see. i’m sticking with gaim… not that i talk to anyone on aim – i just sign in once in a while.

and, sunbelt kerio personal firewall. what a name. i don’t like it much, but i’m using it for now. there’s a lot of reasons to not like it. #1 when you install it, it asks if you want to run simple or advanced mode. it says you can change it later. i haven’t seen an option to change it, and i’ve looked. another thing is gateway mode doesn’t work. booo. another thing is there are options that are nice, but there seems to be no way to turn them off if you want/don’t want them. so, it acts complicated, but i don’t like it.

now you know. until the next firewall program comes along… i’ll keep using kerio, i guess.

came to mind

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

something came to mind to me this morning:
Railroad Tycoon II: A simulation that runs on a totally different engine.
if i could piece that together, it might make for an interesting post. doubt that i will, though. oh, and it has nothing to do with the game.
also, i have a post coming up that shall (yes, i know that’s poor grammar) contain photos from my cell phone. i know you guys (ya’ll) can’t wait. that should be here this afternoon.

google and weather

Friday, July 28th, 2006

first, i must say if you don’t have a personalized google front page, you are really missing out. you can take a look at a screenshot of mine.

the really nice thing i have found is the Verse-a-week Memorization. Sunday you start out with the whole verse, and each day more and more words are “highlighted out.” I unfortunatley haven’t gotten into the habit of reading it every time I see it so I haven’t memorized a verse yet (I’ve used it less than two weeks), but it is definitely something worth trying. at least i think so. and yes, the verses are KJV.

and next, the weather:

obviously, that’s a computer glitch, but i didn’t make that up (i didn’t modify the image). it actually said 0 degrees F in Alvarado.

yay! it’s hotter in Rosemount, MN than Alvarado, Tx. And almost as hot as in OKC, OK. i knew it would happen. and it’s kinda of odd the projected high is 97 for all three cities. and the projected low is also +1 +2. anyway, i don’t talk about weather much. there you have it.

desperate

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

i ordered a dell axim x51v on tuesday night. late tuesday night.

wednesday morning i got an email that my order didn’t go through. i figured out later that i had put in the wrong expiration date.

i have had credit/debit cards not go through before. last time was about 3 years ago at newegg.com. now, i realize that i am about to compare two different companies at two different times. last time, newegg.com canceled my order. this time, dell.com sent me an email wednesday, an email thursday, had a computer call me today, and finally had a person call me. on my cell.

they’re desperate for business.

the lady called me. she didn’t speak good english, but that’s ok. she asked if i would like to use a different credit card or an alternate payment. something like that. i said, very politely, “i would like to cancel my order, ma’am.” she said ok, but she sounded as if i had told her to cut off her feet or to sacrifice her only child. i didn’t tell her that i had reordered the same product from a different reseller and had gotten a slightly better deal. i still bought one. dell still made money. but she sounded quite despondent. ah, well.

by the way, it should be here august 1.

and a link to a photo of it: man, it’s pretty!

demands

was listening to the Common Man (also here)? today.

talking about the twins winning the AL Central division three years in a row, then totally tanking the next year:

“they went from back-to-back-to-back to flat on their back.”

not bad. i laughed. there was more humor (that’s basically what his show consists of), but someone who hasn’t listened to the common man before wouldn’t get it (plus, i forget quickly…), so that’ll do for now.

back later today with more blogging sense or non-sense. we’ll see…
